TEXT AND TEXTILE
(January - March 2021)
This practice explores the duality of the physical and emotional through by developing a relationship between text and textile. For two months daily, I wrote in a stream of consciousness for 15 minutes. I then would revisit the writing and evaluate the concrete, metaphorical and figurative language through color and form. I then took tracing paper and mapped out the shapes and assigned colors to those shapes. Using these tracings, I created small gouache drawings that related to each written composition.
This process expresses an extremely cathartic and emotional part of my work. I began to consider how they might exist in three-dimensional form. Each drawing represents a the emotions experienced during the time I spent writing. I imagined those emotions existing as a physical sculpture, where those emotions could be physically felt. This led me to my "TEXT AND TEXTILE" soft sculpture series linked here.
